Using Commas in A Compound Sentence

Time to review basics:

Some authors like to use short sentences.

Some like to use long sentences.

It’s probably best to use a combination of short and long sentences. This adds variety and enhances the cadence, or sound, of your writing.

Place a comma before the ‘and’ as shown below.

Find the subject and verb in each independent clause.

In the example above, the subjects are:

Simple sentences contain one clause, and compound sentences contain at least two.

The verbs are:

Simple sentences contain one clause, and compound sentences contain at least two.


Today’s Assignment:

1. Check your work. Have you used commas correctly?

2. Write three compound sentences that use the conjunction and. Place a comma before the and.

3. Read your work aloud. Listen to the cadence.
